The Public Sector Recycling Programme

The Ministry of Public Utilities, in collaboration with the Trinidad and Tobago Solid Waste Management Company Limited (SWMCOL), has initiated a Public Sector Recycling Programme (PSRP) with the goal of inculcating attitudinal and behavioural change as it relates to waste generation and disposal.

The objective of the Public Sector Recycling Programme is to recover and divert recyclable wastes such as paper, cardboard, beverage containers and electronic wastes from Government Ministries. Government Ministries generate significantly large volumes of these categories of waste and the implementation of the PSRP across all Ministries would significantly contribute to achieving the waste diversion target of reducing the volume of recyclable waste entering the nation’s landfills by fifty percentover a period of ten (10) years, as articulated in the Waste Recycling Policy and the National Integrated Solid Waste Management Policy.

The programme’s theme/call to action is “Leading by Example” as it aims to ensure that the change becomes institutionalized in the public sector while redounding to the wider society.  The PSRP seeks to encourage an overall reduction of the waste generated while diverting valuable recyclables from your waste stream.

In its first phase, the PSRP will be targeting commonly generated recyclables such as post-consumer beverage containers and office waste paper.
